Ia lahir pada tanggal 4 Agustus 1834 di Hull, Inggris. Nama belakang (venn) diabadikan sebagai nama diagram yang menyatakan hubungan antar himpunan yaitu diagram venn. Walaupun dua orang ahli matematika lain Gottfried Wilhelm Von Leibniz dan Leonhard Euler telah menggunakan diagram yang hamper sama, namun diagram venn lebih terkenal dan banyak digunakan. Hal itu dikarenakan diagram venn lebih menggambarkan hubungan antar himpunan dan lebih mudah dimengerti. Venn mengenyam pendidikan di dua sekolah Highgate dan Islington. Dari catatan sejarah diketahui bahwa dia termasuk siswa yang miskin dan dianggap terlalu dini untuk memasuki perguruan tinggi. Namun begitu ternyata ia mampu memasuki Gonville dan Caius College di Cambridge pada tahun 18532 dan memperoleh gelar dibidang matematika poada tahun 1857.. venn meninggal pada tahun 1923 di Cambridge, Inggris.<br />
